This jewelry is based on designs from Iron Age bridle bits and strap fasteners among a collection of bronze chariot fittings. It is one of the earliest finds of Celtic art from Scotland. The Middlebie Hoard was discovered by chance in 1737 in a bog, a place thought sacred to people of the Iron Age. Chariots were high-status vehicles during this time period, and this valuable material was probably deliberately buried as a religious offering.
